Laser Hair Removal: How to Prep, What to Expect, and What’s Changed in 2026
If you’ve ever considered laser hair removal, you’ve probably wondered…
“Does it hurt?”
“How many sessions do I actually need?”
“Do I just show up and get treated?”
Here’s the truth: laser hair removal is one of the most effective treatments we offer, but your results depend heavily on how you prepare, how consistent you are, and the technology being used.
In this episode of the Aesthetically Awkward Podcast, I sat down with Nurse Kati to break down exactly what patients need to know before starting laser hair removal.
Let’s get into it.
Laser Hair Removal Is a Process, Not a One-Time Treatment
One misconception we hear in clinic is the expectation that one session will “take care of it.” That’s not how this works.
Hair grows in cycles, and laser hair removal only targets hair that is actively in the growth phase during your treatment. At any given time, only a small percentage of your hair is in that growth phase.
That’s why most patients need at least 8 sessions, sometimes closer to 10–12 depending on the area, hair type, and consistency.
If you’re trying to be hair-free by summer, you need to plan ahead because this is a long game and not an overnight fix.
Prepping for Laser Hair Removal (This Actually Matters)
You should shave 12–24 hours before your appointment.
Not right before. Not days before.
Shaving too close to your appointment can irritate your skin, especially when we cleanse and prep the area before treatment. That irritation plus laser = unnecessary sensitivity.
A tiny bit of stubble is completely fine. We just don’t want long hair or freshly irritated skin.
No Waxing, Plucking, or Hair Removal Creams
This is non-negotiable.
Laser targets the melanin in the hair follicle. If you’ve removed the root, there’s nothing for the laser to treat.
Skip waxing, plucking, and depilatory creams for at least 4 weeks before treatment. Shaving is the only approved method.
Avoid Sun Exposure and Spray Tans
This is one of the biggest safety factors.
We want your skin at its natural baseline tone. Why? Because both real and artificial pigment absorb laser energy.
That means:
More sensitivity
Higher risk of burns
Less effective treatments
You cannot be treated with a spray tan on. Period.
Even though some devices can technically treat tanned skin, we don’t recommend it. It forces us to use more conservative settings, which means more sessions and slower results.
If you’re someone who tans regularly, it may be best to plan your laser series during fall and winter.
Come in With Clean Skin
No lotions, oils, deodorant, makeup, or SPF on the treatment area.
We can remove it but by the time we do, your skin may already be irritated. And irritated skin + laser is not the goal.
Clean skin = safer, more effective treatment.
Medications and Skincare: What You Actually Need to Know
This is where patients tend to get confused, so let’s simplify it.
Most antibiotics are fine. Some may increase sensitivity, so we assess case by case. Disclose if you’ve started any new medications or have recently been ill as our provider will need to assess you to determine if it is advisable to receive treatment.
Accutane is a hard no.
You should be off Accutane for at least 6–12 months before any laser treatment due to its impact on your skin barrier.
Topical skincare matters more day-to-day:
If you’re using active ingredients:
Pause AlphaRet about 2–3 days before
Pause tretinoin or other aggressive topical vitamin A products about 3–5 days before (sometimes longer depending on sensitivity)
After treatment, you’ll want to hold actives again until your skin is fully back to baseline. For some patients, this may mean pausing your actives for up to 72 hours.
What Does Laser Hair Removal Actually Feel Like?
Most people expect it to hurt more than it does.
The best way to describe it?
A quick, warm, “prickly” sensation—almost like hot pins and needles.
You should feel something.
If you feel nothing, the treatment likely isn’t effective and your settings need to be adjusted.
We’re looking for a clinical endpoint called perifollicular edema—basically a slight swelling around the hair follicle that tells us we’re hitting the target. The average patient rates their discomfort around 3 out of 10 but this will of course vary depending on the area being treated, technology being used, your ethnicity and personal tolerance of the procedure.
Why Technology Matters
Not all laser devices are created equal and this is where things are changing in a big way for us.
At Luxe Lift, we’ve officially upgraded from our previous systems to the Quanta Systems Echo—a fiber diode laser platform developed in Italy and known globally for advanced laser technology.
To put it simply:
If our previous device was a Ford… this is a Ferrari.
What Makes the Quanta Systems Echo Different
This upgrade isn’t just about having something “new.” It completely changes the patient experience.
Here’s what that actually means for you:
No gel
Older systems require gel for glide, which adds time, mess, and cleanup. This eliminates that completely.
Significantly faster treatments
Full legs can now be treated in about 10 minutes.
Some treatments are reduced by more than 50% in time.
More comfortable experience
Built-in cooling technology plus optional external cooling means less heat, less discomfort, and better tolerance.
Safe for all skin types
From very fair to deeper skin tones, we can safely and effectively treat a wider range of patients.
Better workflow = better consistency
Shorter appointments make it easier for patients to stay on schedule—and consistency is everything with laser hair removal.
Why This Matters for Your Results
At the end of the day, laser hair removal success comes down to three things:
Consistency
Preparation
Technology
When all three are optimized, you get faster clearance, fewer complications, and better long-term outcomes.
Is Laser Hair Removal Right for You?
If you’ve been putting this off because of:
Time
Discomfort
Cost
Or uncertainty about your skin type
This is your sign to come in and have a conversation.
We always recommend starting with a consultation and a spot test so you can feel the treatment yourself before committing.
No pressure. Just education and a plan that makes sense for you.
